Meaning

Have you ever seen an image of a logo or a small text, maybe the name of a particular person or a URL in the middle of any video or image? Did you ask yourself the question: what is it and what is its purpose? I am here to answer your questions. The pattern or the image you have seen inserted is called a watermark. A watermark is inserted on a video to keep the video or the brand from infringement or unlawful use.

A watermark on a video implies authority over online assets and the prevention of theft of digital assets. When you create content you don’t want infringers to steal it and claim it as their own do you? Nobody does. It’s your masterpiece and you don’t want people to use it either on purpose or ignorance. The watermark in the middle of the video helps to protect your work from duplication without your consent.

Benefits

Watermark can have its benefits. You are protecting your digital content by it depending on the watermark you use. Digital thieves are found everywhere and unauthorized use of someone else’s work is highly prevalent along the line. So it’s the best way to secure your work and at the same time increase brand recognition. The logo associated with the content will give the brand a far-fetched recognition. Moreover, the true source or owner of the content will remain identified no matter how much the content has been shared online on various social media platforms. The idea of a watermark has been pervasive since the 13th century. The painter would leave their signature on the bottom of their portrait claiming its ownership. So what stops you from embedding your signature or personalized logos on your video and claiming your rightful ownership?

How to create a watermark?

If you want to feature your videos online or on social media like youtube then watermarking should be opted as an option. In this way, your videos will remain secure throughout various sharing in the online community. If you already have a logo in your mind then embedding it is the best way to go forward with publishing. On the other hand, if you are struggling with it then it’s a piece of cake with some simple steps. You just need to create your offline design and give it a shape in graphics or Canva. Reduce the opacity and make it transparent, small yet legible to the viewers. Then save it in the PNG form and then download it. Now you can insert your logo and watermark the video.

How do you embed a watermark?

It is always considered a wise idea to embed a watermark on your video with various ways to do it. A watermark should be transparent so as not to distract the viewers from the original video intended for the viewers to watch. Uploading a video over youtube or any other watermark app and then adding a watermark is the simplest way to do it. Several free and paid apps do the work. This way the process becomes easier and you can reduce the risk of copyright issues. Besides, you will not be spending any money to secure your video.

You can add your customized watermark logo or texts free online. The process is simple and you’d find people getting a hold of your created video rather than a stolen one. How does that sum up? Want to protect your videos? Then add up your customized logo, the site name, or your name as your watermark and you are good to go.

The embedded watermark on your video helps it to provide recognition to your brand. It ensures the true source of the video, maintaining the brand reputation and protecting it from video theft. Youtube being the second most visited website for various content becomes susceptible to video thefts. Stealing the video as an incognito and making the content its own is an unethical practice and you can prevent it by embedding the watermark in the middle or lower bottom corner of the video.

Creating a watermark is not tedious and less time-consuming with given tools and a few technical skills. You can create your logo using the Canva website on your pc and reduce the opacity and make it more transparent thus removing any distraction to the viewers.

How to remove the watermark?

There might occur a situation where you might need to remove your watermark from your videos. I will mention several reasons here for its removal. Distraction may be one of the cases where the watermark or the logo is of multiple colors instead of monochromatic. This has a high chance of distracting viewers’ attention from the video and creating a loop of rewinding the video or worse skipping the video altogether.

Mention can be made of the logo of any brand which is in the process of evolving. If you started your brand and thus moving forward with it at a good pace and gaining popularity then you might need to keep on updating the logo by making some changes to it.

Instances may also occur when your video doesn’t get to feature in any big media companies or blogs because of your watermark. Hence removing the watermark can be the only resort available. Now the question might arise as to how we remove the watermark from our videos? In answer to that question, we can find several ways to do that.

VLC player is one software where you can remove your watermark hassle-free. You need to open the video in the VLC player and under “Tools” you will find the option of “Effects and Filters” and pressing on that will open a window. From there click “Video Effects“ and then “Overlays “. There you will find the “Logo Erase” option. Under it click “Mask” and press the three dots and then choose the video from the computer and then move the picture from the computer. Once done then the next step would be to move the picture over the logo by mentioning the value in the “Top” and the “Left“ options then press “Close” after finishing the process. However, the VLC player can not permanently remove the logo but hide it temporarily.

Multiple watermark removal apps are available online with paid and free services and do the job by completely removing the logo.

Conclusion

Creating a watermark has its perks. Secure from infringement, and theft. Unauthorized use and distorting the right of its ownership. However, there are various downsides to using it. A watermark does not necessarily define how good of a content creator you are but the quality of the content you produce. If you maintain its quality you will have your due recognition in the digital world. Another bonus is the opportunity to feature your videos in various high-profile businesses and MNC brands that will automatically build your recognition. At the end of the day, it is up to you whether you want to go with a watermark or not because quality will ensure your recognition in the long run.
